The introduction of the emerald ash borer has significantly altered the equilibrium in ecosystems where it has become established. As an invasive species, the emerald ash borer primarily targets ash trees, which are vital components of many forest ecosystems. When these trees are killed off in large numbers, it leads to shifts in species composition, as the loss of a dominant tree species can affect various organisms that rely on ash trees for habitat, food, and overall ecosystem functioning.

This disruption can lead to decreased biodiversity, as other species that depend on ash trees may also decline due to the loss of their habitat. Additionally, this creates opportunities for other species, including other tree species and plant communities, to fill the void left by the dying ash trees, further altering the ecosystem dynamics. The balance among species can be significantly unsettled, leading to cascading effects throughout the food web and impacting overall ecosystem health and resilience.

In summary, the introduction of the emerald ash borer creates a scenario where the existing equilibrium of the ecosystem is disrupted due to the significant decline of ash trees, illustrating how invasive species can have profound impacts on local environments.
